(Video) Living with Bipolar Disorder Well; Cindy’s Story of Overcoming Guilt and Shame

Can people live a happy and healthy life despite living with bipolar disorder?

There is so much stigma that people sometimes feel afraid to be diagnosed or treated,  and therefore suffer unnecessarily for years.

Many people feel guilt and shame for having a disorder, especially mental, even though they did not cause it.

People who don’t understand these disorders have such a negative impression of the illnesses that they unknowingly discriminate against someone with the disorder.

Recently, I interviewed Cindy Simonsen on “Happy and Healthy Mind with Dr. Rozina.”

Cindy was a beautician by profession, has been successfully married for 41 years and lives a very active life (with yoga, biking, hiking, exercising, pickleball (a recent discovery!), photography, writing, journalling, skiing and meeting and talking to people- all) despite living with Bipolar disorder.

In this interview, we discussed;

  • What is Bipolar Disorder?
  • Why everyone needs to learn about it?
  • Cindy’s experience of overcoming her guilt and shame due to Bipolar Disorder.
  • How she struggled for more than 20 years before getting diagnosed.
  • How she learned to live with the disorder.
  • Four conversational safety tools that help her in social situations.
  • Five daily practices that help her live a full, active, and happy life.

She shared her suggestions for anyone living with a mental disorder. Many of those suggestions are universal, so they can help you even if you don’t have the illness. We also answered some questions from the live audience attending the program.

So if you know someone living with bipolar or want to learn for yourself, you will get inspired by Cindy’s story. You are not doomed if you have symptoms of Bipolar. Despite the illness, there is a high likelihood that you can live a happy and healthy life with the proper help and treatment.
