(Video) How To Overcome Self Guilt – Avoiding Should Statements

150 150 Dr Rozina Lakhani

Do you often feel guilty for not being able to accomplish some goals you have set for yourself? Are you looking for answers on how to overcome self-guilt?

Whenever we fail to do something that we have committed ourselves to do,  we tend to develop an inner dialogue that starts with “I should have…”

Sounds familiar? Do you use this word too?

Well, you might not be aware of it, but using the word “should” can negatively impact your mindset. Dr. Shad Helmstetter explains in his book “What to Say When You Talk to Yourself” that when we tell ourselves we “should” be doing something, we’re implicitly reinforcing the idea that we’re not doing it.

So, you might be asking, is there a way to avoid the “should statement” and eliminate this guilt-provoking word from our vocabulary? The answer is YES!

Would you like to learn how to substitute the word “should” with other statements that are healthier and more accepting so you won’t experience self-guilt?

Then watch this video:

In this weekly special, I shared a simple exercise to help you improve your internal dialogue by replacing your “should” statements with “I would like to” statements.

Doing so will help you become more kind and gentle with yourself and will free you from the guilt of “not doing / not being enough.”

So how do you do this?

For example, instead of saying “I should exercise every day.” say: “I would like to do exercise every day.”

In this way, you will feel less pressured and more encouraged to pursue your goals. Replacing “should” with a more helpful dialogue will lead to a healthier relationship with yourself and with others.
